We have a new feature at Fly The Road Club - Googlemap Members Edition. Here's how it works.
First, click on [Googlemap ME (http://flytheroadclub.com/forums/vbgooglemapme.php)] on the navigation bar. This will take you to a Google map hovering somewhere over Los Angeles (Venture Vehicle's home). By zooming in and out and navigating around, you can see where other forum members live. The [List users (http://flytheroadclub.com/forums/vbgooglemapme.php?do=list)] link gives you shortcuts to find people. By the way, this feature is only available to registered users like you.
When you get there, you will see a link that says [Your entry (http://flytheroadclub.com/forums/vbgooglemapme.php?do=addelement)]. Clicking it will take you to a page where you can add a push pin to map yourself. Click and drag on the map to move it around. The [+] and [-] will zoom in and out. Don't worry that a push pin shows up every time you click on the map, the last place you click will be where the pin stays.
Some people have decided to put the pin exactly on top of their houses. Clicking the button that reads [Satellite] may help you find your home. Others have decided to just put the pin in the middle of their subdivisions or towns. Of course, it's entirely up to you.
You can ignore any of the other text boxes, they are optional. In fact, the box labeled "URL of the image for the marker" is confusing and should be ignored! (It allows you to add a picture to your marker, but it is not as easy as it sounds - and could make all the pins disappear! We will post separate instructions later if you really must include a photo.)
So have fun. We'd love to see everyone use this feature. Here's a shortcut to get started right away: [Your entry (http://flytheroadclub.com/forums/vbgooglemapme.php?do=addelement)<!-- / message -->]. <!-- sig -->

Hi, did what you said but it says it can't do it because boxes were left unentered. Any further advice please, thanks?

Must be a bad error code as it shows you are on the map Kuri

Yes I see I'm on there now, thanks

And how did you get on? I have done both ways with and without URL and it hates me like all 'puters do.

Once you click [Your entry], the only thing you need to do is find yourself on the map and enter some "Marker text". Then click [Update the information] and that should do it!
I agree that the instructions on the page are unclear. But since no one here wrote the code, I think we're all afraid to touch it. I know I am.

Tugboatwilly, Mark is correct, that's just how I did it. No URL needed. I just typed in my user name in the marker text box and it took.
I went to the map and there were no entries. Did something happen to the markers? The list is still there but they don't show on the map.

Yep they went poof ... we will have to go through everyones entry and see if they put some extra code for a picture or something that blew it up...
Please stand by.
Ok found it ... we had a entry with a image that whacked the map... it has been corrected. Thanks for pointing this out.

Glad you caught it. Occasionally I just pop over to the map to make sure the pins are still there. When I get some time, I'll see if there is a patch for the issue yet.

To all members:
The Google Member Map is now up and operational again. You can find it on the main bar at the top of the forum. It is labeled "Googlemap ME". Please participate in this feature by adding your location on the map. It's fun for all of us to see each other and where we are all located. Instructions on how to do this are in this thread.
;)ENJOY!;)

To all members...
I want to invite EVERYBODY to participate in our google map by inputting your location. It is really pretty cool to look and see all of our fellow members, and if anyone is located by us. Also, when this vehicle is released, we will be organizing local club chapters and planning special club events for each area.
So, if you can, please take a moment and participate in our google map project. Thanks.

Voila! Not only is the map back, but my pin is still in it :-) Nice work!

Ok, I'm doing something wrong. I don't see ANY pins, and I can't seem to get mine to stick. Am I just plain computer illiterate? Any suggestions?

Wow! I read your post, and went to check the map myself, and found that ALL PINS HAVE VANISHED. I don't know what the problem is, but I'll look into it, and then post it here. Thanks for the heads-up.

I can only get my own pin to show and it won't stay stuck!

Funny thing is - If you select "List Users" we are all there, but when you select "show on map" it zooms to the correct part of the country, but no pin shows. Seems to be a programming glitch within Googlemap.

Oh bother! This is a known bug in the program that I have been complaining about since day one. The forum where the plug-in came from has tons of people complaining about it, but the author is AWOL.
The problem is related to badly formatted XML - in English that means someone is using special characters that don't translate well. There are some unofficial fixes for the problem, but I have been holding off on implementing them until an official fix is released. But, as I stated earlier, the author seems to have lost interest. I'll try to work on it as I get time this weekend, but I can't promise anything.

We are going to be installing the NEW VERSION of vbulletin, and that may create a whole new world of compatability problems. I think we should hold off on doing anything until the new site is up and running, otherwise it may be all wiped-out anyway. The new forum will be simply incredible.

Good job, Mark! :)
Hope everybody will "stick" their pin in the google map so we can all see where everybody is located. This will make it really easy to organize local chapters in the future.....Although, this is way down the road yet!
Anyway, it's up and running again.

The google map is up and running again. Please be sure to click on the link in the top menu, and "stick" your pin in the map. It's a fun feature that let's everybody see where other members are located.

The Googlemap ME only shows up when you click on a topic, but not on the top link http://www.flytheroadclub.com/modules/Jig/index.php. Am I doing anything wrong? :( Is my link out of date? Other than that everything seems to be working on the club site.
By the way, talked to a friend in ST. Charles, IL and gas there was $4.17 as of yesterday. We need the V1 soon.

You should be seeing a link in the TOP menu bar called Googlemap ME. When you click on that, it will take you to the club map. But you must be LOGGED-IN to see this in the top menu bar. If you are not logged in as a member, then you will not see it.

The portal uses a different set of templates. Right now I have no idea how to add the GoogleMap there, but I'll look into it.

Hey folks,
We just hit 400 members, but only 77 have stuck a pin in the Googlemap!
I like to see where evryone is located ... never know, it could have an effect on where dealers are sited.
MV, I agree. =y: Can anyone who is not listed on the map please do so. :( It will also help Ian to realize where he might expand the sales. ;) It looks like the East coast has quite a few, but I am sure there are a lot more in that area.
Thanks,

I just thought I would BUMP this thread up to make all new members aware of our Club Google Map.
If you haven't already, please add your location to our google map. It's a good way for members to have a general idea of where we are all located.
Thanks!

At first I thought "oh man Nebraska needs to get on track!" Then I thought "oh yeah, not many turns to lean into in Nebraska"

Just thought I would give this thread another "Bump" to remind people to add their name to our club map.
If you haven't already, please log in and join the other members on our official map!
Thanks!
