Seen at the pre-opening of the 2008 Detroit Auto Show: If you have a spare $80k - $100k in your pocket you will soon, in theory, have another plug-in hybrid Car to select from other than the Tesla roadster. This one is a four-door premium sport sedan is the first fruit of a joint venture between Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide and Fisker Coachbuild.

In a joint statement on 11/13/07, the two companies said, "Initial deliveries are anticipated to commence in the fourth quarter of 2009, with annual production projected to reach 15,000 units." This is apparently the first vehicle in the joint venture's product pipeline, with the statement noting that the companies will "offer a range of environmentally friendly premium cars."

One of the most unusual aspects of this plug-in hybrid is the slate of recharging-system options. The Fisker Quantum Hybrid can be recharged at home with a 110-volt outlet. Other options include a "fast-charging 220/240 system" and a solar carport fitted with solar modules.' A solar roof panel provides power for ventilation when parking, pre-air-conditioning of the vehicle, supplemental cooling of the lithium-ion battery part and opportunity trickle charging of the vehicle batteries," according to the vehicle's makers.

The Fisker Quantum Hybrid's looks veer sharply away from the Earth-Shoe aesthetic of some hybrids. The low-slung exterior includes a dramatically long hood. "The sleek design accentuating the long hood is a direct result of our breakthrough chassis, which carries the battery pack at the center of the vehicle between the two axles," said Henrik Fisker, designer and CEO of Fisker Automotive.

According to the Fisker Web site vehicles will be sold for $80K with a special Signature Edition Vehicles for $100k - Which will be delivered with a special numbered and signed plaque, a color and trim combination similar to the Detroit Show-Car. Included is a complete leather Interior upholstery and special Exterior paint finish

So their strategy to take a production car and modify it so they don't have to deal with the FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) and DOT (Department of Transportation) certifications? Might work, but didn't Tesla Motors have to get their battery certified as safe to ship? At what point does a customizer have to get their modifications certified?

This vehicle was being discussed in the forum back around 2 years ago in this thread....

I'm now going to move these posts to that thread to keep things nice and "clean" in the club!
