Will you be providing instructions as to how to post our locations on Googlemap? I have already found my location, I want to know how to add the right marker.

I'll write up an announcement in the next couple of days. In the meantime, a little warning - sometimes all the push pins disappear. A work in progress...

Just click on the [Your Entry] link to add yourself. I just put my forum username in for Market Title and Marker Text.

After that, browse the map to see where other users are located. Eventually, I expect us to use this map to plan group trips (including V1 purchase flights).

Some simple instructions would be helpful.

I blundered around more than several times before finally giving up--only to find out a day later that "my entry" was successfully added. (Don't even know how I picked the correct pushpin.)

For some reason, the main map overlays (draws) my location on top of AZ--it clips out the westcoast entirely. Go figure.

You do not have to "pick" a push pin. I do believe that you are given a push pin automatically based on your status as a member. This is how it worked for me, anyway.

Sorry, it's been busy around here and I haven't had the time to write anything up.

Randi, when you tried it we had it set in something like a moderate mode. Your push pin didn't show up until we released it. AZ has changed that setting so now it shows immediately after you create it.

You don't have to pick a pin. The poorly worded text box about an image for the marker actually refers to a picture of your house, a nearby landmark, yourself, or whatever you want to put on the [Image] tab of the balloon that pops up. But it's buggy, so I recommend not putting anything there. If you really want to, add an URL for a photo and then check the map. If all the pins disappear, then you should remove the URL.

LikeMyArt, the reason your pin doesn't show up until you zoom in is because you and AZ are both right on top of each other. I think it shows whatever pin was added first.

I am now on map. I had to convert Google maps location in Degrees, Minutes and Seconds to the decimal equivalent. Then I had to adjust the number using the hybrid map to put the pin on my house. That took about 10 minutes to fine tune. Now that you can see my house, don't bomb it! ;-)

JoeU,

Please take a look at my pin on the map. Mine shows up at my exact location, but I did not do anything that you said. I just kept clicking on the map until it zoomed in on my exact spot. It was really easy and only took about 30 seconds at the most.

Let me know if I did anything wrong. Thanks.

Derwin

I zoomed into my location, pressed the enter button but it kept the coordinates of someplace around LA. It never changed the coordinates to my new location so I did it the old fashion way - slow and prodding.

Thanks,

JoeU

Wow, that's strange. I just left the url space empty. I put Derwin home base in the other spaces. I tried a couple times and then it finally worked. Try again and fill in the other spaces except leave the url empty. See if that works for you.

Derwin,

I followed you advise and it worked prefectly

One other thing, I was playing around a little. If you zoom in close enough you can put the stick pin very close to your door step.

OR, 'Parking Location' for your Venture Vehicle's "Vhatever"!:p
FINALLY, got 'entered' on the map, but showed up as a 'Registered User', not 'Moderator' (?another 'glitz'?).

That's right, the Parking location:IDEA:

Oh no you didn't get demoted did you? Just kidding:LOL: I'm sure Mark or AZE can get it fix for you.

Well, I thought I would revive this old thread about the club google maps.

At one time we had this installed here at the club, and could see members all over the world on an interactive google map. But for some reason it just is not showing up anymore.

I just tried re-installing everything, but it still isn't showing up. I'm not a slouch, and I know my way around this vBulletin software. But for some reason I just can't get this map installed and working again.

If anybody knows what I need to do to get this up and running again, please post your ideas here.

Thanks.

As most of you could probably guess, I've been putting a great deal of work into the club lately. Well, I thought getting a google map for members would be a pretty neat idea, but don't really want to put the effort into it unless you guys think would like to see it.

The google map would allow you, as a member, to put a stick pin in the map showing your location. If we got all 5,000+ members to do this, I think we would be able to see members from all over American and the world!

Give me your thoughts and ideas about this, and vote in the new poll that I just launched.

Thanks.

Put a pin in Springflield, VA for me :)

Did you VOTE in the poll?

I don't put pins in the map. The way this SHOULD work, is that YOU and every other member would put a pin in the map showing your location. But for some reason I can't get the thing to work. If anybody knows how to get this working in vBulletin 4, please let me know.

I am willing but unclear how to do it. Is there a link on this site to open up and then put a pin? How do you label pin? Is this open to view by the members or the world?

This is only available to registered MEMBERS of the club. I'll be putting a LINK in the header when I get this up and running, so then all you would have to do is click on that link, and then it'll take you to the Interactive Club Map.

But, as I said, there are glitches in it right now, and I'm having a difficult time figuring out how to get it to work, or even show up! The map is supposed to show up when going to this location:

http://flytheroadclub.com/forums/vbgooglemapme.php

But nothing is showing up except a bunch of errors.

If anybody has any experience with this, please contact me or post here.

By the way, did you VOTE in the poll? :-)

Thanks.

So, anybody have any ideas on how we can get this sucker working?

I've exhausted every knowledge base that I could find, and still can't figure this out. I'm beginning to think that this may not be compatible with the vBulletin 4.0 Suite.

If anybody knows anything about this, please help us out.

Thanks.

Perhaps your software can do a website capture? If so, go here: http://mapservices.org/myguestmap/map/oldhouseweb Capture it, paste it, and then remove the existing pins so we can start from scatch. My pin is on the site at Grass Valley, CA.

Maybe this will help. At least it is a working site. Or, just set up a new site there and then link to it.

Derwin

Thanks, Jack. That is EXACTLY the kind of map I am talking about. We had this Google map installed at the club a couple years ago, but then it got "broken" over the years!

Unfortunately, this is not a "copy and paste" proposition. The site you linked to has the Google map working, but this map must be installed internally, and it has a special Google access code that is specific to each person and/or website. I have this code, and everything else needed. But for some reason I can't get it to show up in this new vBulletin software.

I always did like the map feature. It was fun to see who may be in your area...or an area you are traveling to. Hope you can get it working again.

Yeah, I loved seeing all of the members spread throughout the world! It was really fascinating to literally watch the club grow over the years and the map getting more and more crowded.

I'll keep working on this until it gets resolved.

Please try and make it simple for the "Computer challenged club members" ( like me). I am looking forward to using it. When we get them we can plan "Road Trips" and gather members along the way. Imagine seeing a couple dozen in a row. That will get some attention. CAN'T WAIT

Don't worry, bmw, it's a really simple system once we get it up and running.

By the way..... I'm posting this using the Motorola Xoom... my first post ever using a portable device!

MarkH

voted no. I have to say that I think it is a bit early in the process for the map. Once I have my hands wrapped around a steering wheel it will be a completely different matter though. Then it would be fun to know who the other drivers are. Till then, I'm still in Southwest PA.

BTW Derwin, congrats on the Xoom. Great tablet.

I know what you mean, Mark, but we have to do SOMETHING to keep us occupied while waiting! lol

The Motorola Xoom tablet is INCREDIBLE! I absolutely love it.

I think that if you can get it working to do it IF you can have a voluntary opt in. Basically let everyone choose to show their locations or not. I think it may just lead to people seeing that some members are very close to them and maybe that would lead to local club chapters and whatnot. Local chapter "VA Flying V's" starting up! lol Needs some work.

Absolutely. The Google Map system is 100% voluntary, and people will only show up on the map if THEY put a PIN in the map showing their location. This is how it has always worked on the club site up until we switched servers, but it somehow got broke after the switch.

Hey Derwin, I was looking on Google Latitude and there is a feature in there to share your location with a blog or website. It allows you to just use "City Level" so that it does not get too personal but maybe it is worth looking in to? It might be a bit too open however as it would show your location wherever you log in to latitude at.

It's called Google Public Location Badge.

If we can get this going again I think it would benefit Persu as well as the members. Persu could see concetrations of people interested in the V3, and thus target dealerships/ sales to those areas. Additionally, members could form clubs if there were enough people nearby.

Firedawg, totally there once we get them.
